Be sure to count the spaces above doors and windows. The space created above the garage would also have to be fully insulated in a similar fashion to the garage. When a previously insulated room above the garage exists before the conversion then roof insulation will not be an issue and you will not have to add extra insulation to the garage ceiling. So before insulating go around the garage with a can of low expanding spray foam and seal all gaps and cracks that let in the daylight. Adding insulation won t make your garage a perfect temperature by itself but it will take the edge off the freezing winters and the sweltering summers. In either case you will need to follow the general steps below to insulate your garage roof. However if you have a cathedral style garage roof you will need a scaffolding to get into the upper areas of the roof.

You can insulate the walls ceiling and door of the garage to the highest r value possible but if you fail to fill those air gaps you ll still be wasting a lot of heat. To prepare determine the area of the space you plan to insulate and add 10 to 20 percent to account for mistakes and odd spaces you need to fill. If your garage is attached to your house you will notice a big difference in your home s temperature as well. If you have a flat garage roof and an attic above you can install the garage insulation from below using a standard ladder.
